Recycling Centre Bristol

Household waste site signage

Working outside the context and immediate client group of the Legible City initiative, Lacock Gullam developed physical improvements, signage and identity at one of Bristol’s household waste and recycling centres.

Working with City ID and Bristol-based graphic design consultants Thirteen, the team developed physical interventions and information hierarchies. The project improved the user experience and operational efficiency of the centre with a range of interventions including signage, traffic management and other measures to enhance visual appearance. Raising the profile of the site, and increasing efficiency through better information all contribute towards the objective of achieving higher levels of recycling.

The first phase of signs was introduced in the summer of 2003, with the site improvements being officially launched in March 2004. The project is widely referenced in studies of best practice.
